Japanese Lucky Charms (2019)
In my art, I’ve been drawn to creating icons of good fortune rooted in Japanese tradition—symbols believed to bring prosperity, luck, and happiness. Each of these icons carries a story, a cultural resonance that has developed over centuries and is cherished by people in Japan and across Asia. In creating these pieces, I aim to convey not only their beauty but also the spirit of joy and optimism they embody.
The Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin): These gods are a lively ensemble of deities, each representing a unique virtue or blessing—good fortune, happiness, wealth, and longevity among them. The Seven Lucky Gods are beloved figures in Japanese folklore, often depicted together, symbolizing the holistic balance of good fortune in various aspects of life.
Maneki-Neko (The Beckoning Cat): Recognized around the world, this iconic cat raises one paw, inviting good luck, health, and wealth to those who welcome it. Traditionally, a raised left paw attracts customers, while a raised right paw invites prosperity and success. Maneki-Neko is a friendly guardian for businesses and homes alike.
The Magic Mallet (Uchide no Kozuchi): Often seen in folklore held by the deity of wealth, this mallet is believed to bring forth abundance with each swing. It symbolizes boundless resources and the power of making one’s dreams and goals a reality, serving as a reminder of prosperity within reach.
Turtles and Cranes: These animals represent longevity and wisdom. The turtle, slow but determined, is a symbol of enduring life and resilience, while the crane, graceful and elegant, is associated with loyalty and fidelity. Together, they celebrate a life lived with grace and patience, promoting harmony and long-lasting prosperity.
The Puffed Sparrow (Fukura Suzume): Unlike common sparrows, the Fukura Suzume is a little bird depicted in art with its feathers puffed up, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune in abundance. This cheerful creature is an emblem of optimism and contentment, bringing lighthearted charm and warmth to any setting.
Red Fuji (Aka Fuji): Mt. Fuji, covered in red hues at dawn, is a rare yet breathtaking sight, seen as an auspicious symbol, especially around the New Year. Red Fuji symbolizes strength, vitality, and a fresh beginning, embodying the hope and success one wishes to carry into the future.
In creating these pieces, I not only aimed to capture the detailed beauty of each icon but to channel the uplifting spirit they bring to daily life. To me, creating art based on these symbols is a joyful process—a way to honor and share the timeless belief that good fortune can be inspired by imagery. By sharing these icons with new audiences, I hope they too can sense the joy and hope that have filled Japanese homes for generations, inviting happiness, abundance, and optimism into their own lives.
